Country Music has been around for decades and since the 1920's it's taken its roots from the blues and folk families. Up until recently it hasn't been very popular in European countries possibly due to its stronger connection to the deep South of America.
Many people have associated country music with Cowboys and Rodeo's.
I think it's unusual how people who take up a certain lifestyle are more likely to listen to a certain type of music. This may be a stereotype but when I imagine a cowboy, wearing cowboy boots riding a horse into the sunset he doesn't listen to The Black Eyed Peas or Justin Bieber because it's just so unconventional. So many people strongly associate Cowboys with the sound of an acoustic guitar, mandolin or banjo which means that whenever someone sees the embodiment of a Cowboy they will think about country music (and vise versa).
This is why signs are so important:
For example, there are many items/props which people associate with Cowboys or the "Country and Western" lifestyle such as a horse, or a saddle; a spur, or a cowboy boot, or a lasso and a cow skull. These will therefore also be associated with Country and Western Music.
Iconic Signs- There are best identified as drawings which look like the object you are trying to represent. Like a drawing of a cowboy hat stands for the notion of a cowboy hat based on how similar they look to each other.
Indexical Signs-The types of signs are known as the cause-and-affect signs due to their relationship of the thing they are trying to represent. For example a saddle is an indexical sign for horse riding.
Symbolic Signs- These could be written words like "Banjo" or "Lasso". Due to our understanding of the meaning which the English language has given these words we understand the connotations behind them.
